Advanced Desktop Publishing- Magazine Layout

Advanced Desktop Publishing- Magazine Layout

A layout is the arrangement of type and graphics on a printed publication. A good layout should serve the purpose intended by the designer, organize the information and graphics in order to create a visual path for readers to follow, and attract the attention of readers. There’s no one right way to create a good layout. In this assignment, students utilized Adobe InDesign to do a ten page layout that was an interpretation of Rolling Stone magazine. Also students had to execute text wraps, style sheets, and text alignments. Sean Brett did an excellent job! Good Work!

Movie Poster Design

Made in many different sizes and versions, and released in different moments all along a movie’s life, posters immortalize in one static image the feeling and the atmosphere of a motion picture. Some posters can be dark or try to frighten the audience, others bedazzling with bright colors; some can be someway informative, while others can be fully teasing and may provide you only the date when movie will be released, even if you may not know what the movie is about.

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN tells the incredible true story of Rodriguez, the greatest ’70s rock icon who never was. Discovered in a Detroit bar in the late ’60s by two celebrated producers struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics, they recorded an album which they believed would secure his reputation as the greatest recording artist of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, he became a phenomenon. The film follows the story of two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez.

Sean Brett, Dave Viano and Kristen Chrzanowski did an excellent job with their concepts to help promote this awesome documentary. All work was produced primarily with Adobe Illustrator, with the help of Photoshop. Excellent work everyone!!

Advanced Desktop Publishing – Plug

Something that tempts or attracts, especially one with a promise of reward or pleasure. This may also be known as a plug. This is basically something the magazine might give away to lure the reader into buying the magazine. a lure may also be something featured in the article to get the reader to buy something else, for example, the part on my page that talks about their album that’s just come out, it is luring the reader into buying it.

Asia Jackson and Marcus Christian did an excellent job of conveying a simplistic message within these Beverage layouts. Excellent use of imagery, tyography, balance and overall composition.

Advanced Desktop Publishing – Brochures

Brochures are most commonly found at places that tourists frequently visit, such as museums, major shops, and tourist information and even in clinics or doctors office. The most common types of single-sheet brochures are the bi-fold and the tri-fold. A bi-fold brochure results in four panels , while a tri-fold results in six panels.

Purpose of brochure may vary from business to business. Some are designed to display services, whereas others are focused on selling a product. These Students took an existing layout and made a complete redesign. All layouts were done in Adobe Indesign. Great work by Asia Jackson, Gen Lohr, John Winegarden and Marcus Christian.

Photo retouching

Photo retouching is a big part of Photoshop and commonly used in magazines, books, advertisements. It is not too exaggerated when saying that you see this kind of work every day even if you are not a graphic designer. Various methods can be used to achieve stunning effects, sky is the only limitation. However, it is definitely hard to master and requires you to have strong understanding about layers, color and brightness, sometimes filter effects as well.

Elizabeth Wessing did an excellent job on utilizing all retouch tools, such as Dodge, Burn and spot healing to name a few. This was some minor surgery that she performed on the artist Prince. Keep up the good work!

Desktop Publishing – Package Design

Package design is deceptively simple. Many designers wrongfully approach this task as merely a matter of aesthetics and give no thought to the fact that packaging has to succeed on many variables. The fact that a package is created to hold a product is really a secondary goal from the designer’s perspective. From where you’re sitting, a package is created to sell a product. Many designers like to approach packaging as their own little canvas of creativity and the current trend is towards minimalism: the less the better. As much as we designers would love for that to be true, it simply isn’t always the case.

Elizabeth Wessing, John Winegarden, and Genevieve Lohr did a fabulous job in these layouts by displaying enticing graphics and beautiful color theory to catch the buyer’s attention. Layouts were built in Adobe Illustrator along with utilizing brushes in Adobe Photoshop for added graphics. Also, all Typography, Barcodes, Ingredients and every piece of line art were rebuilt in Adobe Illustrator. Notice the spot colors and registration marks; these are ready for print and packaging! Fantastic job to all!
